We've uploaded the "official" 1.3.0 release on sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/colladamaya/ There has been a lot of activity recently. In the past week alone, new features and bug fixes include: multiple texcoords export/import, fixes to the camera and light import, closer conformance with the schema, etc. We've also merged a couple of changes from generous external contributors, e.g. to export animated color/transparency channels (Cedric Perthuis). The 1.3.0 release will be updated as important issues are fixed. We're also working on post 1.3 Collada features, which will continue to be released on a near-daily basis. In particular, we've been working closely with Stan from Ageia and within the Physics WG, to prototype the Collada physics export from Maya. We expect to have a fairly complete implementation next month. For more information, register to the "colladamaya-updates" mailing list at: http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=136478 |

Alias open-sources Collada plug-in
Posted by admin on 04/17/05 19:20:21 Last week, Alias has graciously released the Collada plug-in for Maya, under the MIT license. I have been nominated as its official maintainer. I have just finished setting up a sourceforge project for the plug-in: http://sourceforge.net/projects/colladamaya/
I haven't had the time to set up the CVS code tree yet, but here's what I did so far:
1. Mailing list: If you want to receive frequent notifications of improvements to the plug-in, you should register to the following mailing list, used to announce frequent updates to the plug-in:
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/colladamaya-updates
2. If you are not interested in the tiny-gritty details of each new release, but still want to keep an eye on the project once in a while, don't despair: I'll post news on the sourceforge summary page every few weeks, when major updates occur.
3. I have uploaded the latest version of the plug-in, accessible from the sourceforge summary page, with some new features implemented at SCEA's request.
- Updated to Collada version 1.3 - The plug-in can now import and export both weakly- and strongly-typed arrays. By default, the export uses strongly-typed arrays. To enable weakly-typed array export (e.g. for backward-compatibility purposes), use the exportStronglyTypedArrays export option, with a value different than "true" or "1". More details on how to do so in the release notes. - Quite a lot of refactoring, to implement the previous change and in prevision of Emdigo API integration.
I have implemented lots of improvements to the plug-in in the past month or so. If you're interested in the details, read the changes.txt file.

I spent the last 3 weeks working with Alias and SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) engineers, to improve the quality, reliability and feature set of the Maya-Collada plug-in. Collada is a promising 3D file format, based on XML and therefore quite extensible; more information can be found at the official web site: www.collada.org
Follow this link to download the latest public release.
Note that another version, with more fixes and features (including sampled animations and skinning), should be released sometime next week. I'll upload the link as soon as Alias releases it.
